The Fishing Port
The working fishing port is one of the most photogenic spots in Morocco. Blue wooden boats, fishermen mending nets, seagulls wheeling overhead — it's raw, authentic and spectacular. Best visited in the morning when the catch comes in.
The Beach
Essaouira's long Atlantic beach stretches for miles. It's one of the world's top kitesurfing destinations thanks to the reliable trade winds. Even if you're not surfing, a walk along the beach with the spray in your face and the city ramparts behind you is unforgettable.
Art Galleries & Gnawa Music
Essaouira has a long history as an artists' colony — Jimi Hendrix famously visited in 1969. The medina is dotted with galleries showcasing Moroccan contemporary art. In the evenings, Gnawa musicians play in the squares — a hypnotic, spiritual music unique to this city.
