Chefchaouen is unlike anywhere else on earth. Nestled in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, this small city of 45,000 people has painted its medina in every shade of blue imaginable β from pale sky blue to deep cobalt, cerulean and indigo. It is Morocco's most photographed city, and one of the most visually extraordinary places you will ever visit.
Why is Chefchaouen Blue?
The blue color dates back to the 15th century when Jewish refugees fleeing Spain settled in the city. In Jewish tradition, blue represents the sky and heaven. The custom spread throughout the community and eventually became the city's defining characteristic. Today the blue is repainted regularly and has become a proud local identity.
Top Things to Do in Chefchaouen
Wander the Blue Medina
Simply wandering is the main activity in Chefchaouen. Every corner reveals a new shade of blue, a flower-filled doorway, a cat sleeping in a shaft of sunlight. The medina is small enough to explore fully in a day β but beautiful enough to spend three days in and still discover new corners.
Hike to the Spanish Mosque
A 20-minute hike above the medina brings you to an abandoned Spanish mosque with the most spectacular panoramic view of the blue city against the green Rif Mountains. Go at sunset β the light on the blue rooftops is extraordinary.
Ras el-Maa Waterfall
At the edge of the medina, a small waterfall feeds a stream where local women wash clothes in the traditional way. It's a peaceful, authentic spot away from the main tourist areas.
Plaza Uta el-Hammam
The heart of the medina β a large square lined with cafes, the Grand Mosque and the red-walled Kasbah. Sit here with a mint tea and watch Chefchaouen life unfold around you.
"The best light for photography is early morning (7β9am) before the day-trippers arrive. The blue walls glow beautifully in morning light and you'll have the streets almost to yourself. Avoid midday β harsh light and crowds."
How to Get to Chefchaouen
- From Fes: 3 hours by bus or private car β most popular route
- From Tangier: 2.5 hours β good option if arriving by ferry from Spain
- From Marrakech: 6β7 hours β best combined with a Fes stop
- From Casablanca: 4.5 hours direct
Where to Stay
Stay inside the medina for the best experience. Casa Perleta and Dar Echchaouen are excellent riads with rooftop terraces overlooking the blue city. Book well in advance for spring and autumn β Chefchaouen fills up fast.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (MarchβMay) and autumn (SeptemberβOctober) are ideal β warm days, cool nights and fewer crowds than summer. Avoid August when Spanish and Moroccan tourists flood the city. Winter is quiet and beautiful β the mountains sometimes get snow which is magical against the blue walls.
