The 4 Seasons in the Sahara

Best Season
πŸ‚ Autumn (Oct–Nov)
Daytime: 25–30Β°C Β· Night: 12–18Β°C

Our top recommendation. Perfect temperatures, beautiful golden light, fewer crowds than spring. The desert is at its most photogenic.

Best Season
🌸 Spring (Mar–May)
Daytime: 22–32Β°C Β· Night: 10–16Β°C

Equally excellent. Wildflowers bloom in the valleys along the route. Warm days, cool nights β€” ideal for camping under the stars.

❄️ Winter (Dec–Feb)
Daytime: 15–20Β°C Β· Night: 0–5Β°C

Cold nights β€” bring warm layers! But crystal clear skies make for incredible stargazing. Very quiet with fewer tourists and lower prices.

β˜€οΈ Summer (Jun–Aug)
Daytime: 38–45Β°C Β· Night: 20–25Β°C

Extremely hot. We don't recommend it unless you're heat-adapted. Camel rides are limited to early morning/evening only.

Month by Month Breakdown

January & February

Winter in the Sahara is surprisingly cold at night β€” temperatures can drop to near freezing. But daytime is pleasant (15–20Β°C) and the skies are crystal clear. If you're a photographer, winter light is extraordinary. You'll also find fewer tourists and lower prices on accommodation.

March, April & May

Spring is one of the two best times to visit. Temperatures are warm but comfortable, and the drive from Marrakech through the Atlas Mountains and the Draa Valley is spectacular with wildflowers. The Erg Chebbi dunes glow beautifully in spring light. April is particularly popular β€” book early.

June, July & August

Summer is extremely hot. Temperatures in the desert regularly exceed 42Β°C during the day. Camel treks are only possible at sunrise or after 5pm. We generally advise against summer unless you have a specific reason to go β€” and even then, you should stay in air-conditioned camps.

September & October

October is our personal favourite month to lead the Sahara trip. The heat has broken, the light is golden and warm, nights are comfortable for sleeping under the stars, and the dunes are at their most dramatic. This is peak quality β€” book months in advance.

November & December

November remains excellent β€” similar to October with slightly cooler nights. December transitions to winter conditions. Christmas and New Year in the Sahara is a magical experience β€” many travellers choose this period specifically for the atmosphere.

πŸ’‘ Local Tip from Hakim

"Whatever month you visit, always plan your camel trek for sunset or sunrise β€” never midday. The light, the colors and the temperature are infinitely better. This is the difference between a good photo and an extraordinary one."
