Marrakech is one of the most popular short-break destinations for UK travellers — and it's easy to understand why. Just 3.5 hours from London Gatwick or Stansted, Morocco's most captivating city offers more culture, colour, history and flavour per square metre than almost anywhere else on earth. And it costs a fraction of a European city break.
As a Marrakech local who has guided hundreds of British visitors through the medina, I've written this guide specifically for UK travellers — covering everything from the best flights to book, to what your pounds will get you, to the tours worth doing and the tourist traps to avoid.
Getting There — Flights from the UK
| Airline | From | Price (return) | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| easyJet | Gatwick, Luton, Bristol, Manchester | £60–£150 | 3h 20min |
| Ryanair | Stansted, Birmingham, Edinburgh | £50–£130 | 3h 30min |
| British Airways | Heathrow | £120–£280 | 3h 25min |
| Royal Air Maroc | Heathrow | £150–£300 | 3h 30min |
| TUI | Manchester, Gatwick, Birmingham | £80–£180 | 3h 35min |
Book 6–8 weeks in advance for the best easyJet and Ryanair prices. Avoid half-term weeks (October, February, May) unless you book months ahead — prices triple. Tuesday and Wednesday flights are consistently the cheapest.
When to Visit — Best Times for UK Travellers
🌸 March–May (Spring) — Best Overall
Perfect temperatures (22–28°C), beautiful light, flowers blooming in the Atlas valleys. This is when Marrakech is at its most photogenic. Our top recommendation for UK visitors. Book early — March and April sell out fast from the UK.
🍂 October–November (Autumn) — Second Best
The summer crowds have gone, temperatures are ideal (25–30°C), and the city feels more relaxed. October is arguably the best month to visit the Sahara Desert — perfect for the 3-day tour from Marrakech.
❄️ December–February (Winter) — Budget Season
Cheapest flights and hotels. Daytime temperatures of 18–22°C feel warm compared to UK winters. Christmas and New Year in Marrakech has become increasingly popular with British travellers — the city decorates beautifully and the atmosphere is magical.
☀️ June–August (Summer) — Avoid if Possible
Very hot (38–42°C). Most UK travellers find the heat overwhelming in July and August. If you must travel in summer, plan indoor activities for midday and limit outdoor exploration to early morning and evening.
What Things Cost — Pounds vs Dirhams
Morocco uses the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). The exchange rate is approximately £1 = 12–13 MAD, making Morocco excellent value for British travellers.
- Street food meal at Djemaa el Fna — £2–4 (25–50 MAD)
- Restaurant lunch in the medina — £6–12 (75–150 MAD)
- Nice riad per night — £50–120 (600–1500 MAD)
- Taxi across the medina — £1–2 (15–25 MAD)
- Fresh orange juice at Djemaa el Fna — £0.50 (7 MAD)
- Guided day trip — £30–180 depending on destination
Get Dirhams from a bank ATM on arrival — rates are better than airport exchange. Revolut and Wise cards work perfectly in Marrakech ATMs with no fees. Don't bring pounds to exchange — Euro and Dollar are accepted everywhere but pounds less so.

Essential Tips for British Travellers
- No visa required for UK passport holders — entry is free for up to 90 days
- EHIC/GHIC not valid in Morocco — travel insurance with medical cover is essential
- Tap water — drink bottled water only
- Tipping culture — 10–15% at restaurants, £1–2 for guides who help you
- Language — French and Arabic are main languages but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Our guides all speak excellent English.
- Safety — Marrakech is generally very safe for tourists. Use common sense in the medina and be firm but polite with persistent vendors.
- Dress code — cover shoulders and knees in the medina out of respect. This also reduces hassle from vendors significantly.
